第一章 牛伢的艳遇
Chapter One Niuya’s Love Affairs
念初中那会儿，牛伢的数理化好得呱呱叫，但英语却是落雨挑稻草，越挑越重，毕业考试还记了零分。还好，他还是被贫下中农推荐上了高中。就这样，他拖着英语这条残腿，蹒跚地，走进了益阳县蜚英中学的校园。令人匪夷所思的是，过去，他冷落英语而慢慢远离了英语，可是现在，在美丽的蜚英山下，重新邂逅了英语这位美人。也许是沾了什么灵气吧，牛伢原来对英语冥顽不灵的心，现在这么豁然开朗了起来。说也是，蜚英山也算得上钟灵毓秀，人杰地灵，据说蜚英中学还是著名作家周立波先生的父亲创办的。就在那片青山绿水中，牛伢和美人第二次相遇，但再见如故，一见钟情。欣欣然，彼此有了亲密的接触。牛伢的心扉轻轻叩开了，爱意慢慢萌动了。在课余的点滴时间里，在饭后的些许休憩中，他和美人粘在一起，蝶燕齐飞，形影不离。在以后漫长的岁月里，他们彼此结下了生死相依的情缘。
The cowboy Niuya was a tiptop student in maths,physics and chemistry as well in his junior middle school;nevertheless,he was ,for lack of foundation ,weighed down by English ,just as if by a load of straw in the rain .Lucky for him,he was still recommended, by the Poor and Lower-middle Peasants Administrative Committee ,to go to a local senior middle school.Handicaped by English,he staggered along into Feiying Middle School of Yiyang County.English,at that time, was just like a beautiful girl,so many students vied with each other in paying attentions to the girl while Niuya only gave her a cold_shoulder .
However, shortly after he entered senior middle school,he began to be warmly intimate with her again.which is really a puzzle to people. Strange to say,Niuya was ,originally impenetrably thickheaded in learning English in the contrast with the present situation ,where he became quick_minded with this subject.This can possibly be attributed to the fact that he was enlightened by something mysterious hidden in that place.Itis true that embedded in Feiying Mountains was a kind of culture which bred and nurtured some outstanding persons。As the story goes, Feiying Middle School,named after the so_called spiritual Mountain Feiying , was established by an old scholar who cultivated in this school his son Zhou Libo. who later became a great writer and master translator of China.The school set off by the verdant mountains was really a beautiful sight .Impacted by the scene and the atmasphere,Niuya suddenly saw the light of English and ,later on, he and the girl were as thick as thieves.As a result,Niuya’s icy heart began to melt into the love of English ,or the beautiful girl forever.In the years that followed,he spent all his spare time intimately clinging to it and indissolubly bonded with it.
英语啊，多少学子，在这位美人身上耗费了多少岁月！牛伢也这样，爱上了英语，就和它天天粘在一起，一天也没有分开过。然而，初学者学英语，尽管花的时间多，但还是步步为难，不过，他不怕难。为了找到方法，他冥思苦想，有时想得忘乎所以，旁若无人。他学习就这么投入。
At that time, many students were spending many hours a day clinging to English as if to their favoured girl friend .The same was true of Niuya now.He started to live a busy life of English every day from that time on.However,beginners like him unavoidably came across much difficulty in learning English at every step ,whatever effort they took,but Niuya still forged ahead in spite ofit.He was,sometimes,lost in the thought of good ways of learning English.
谁都知道，英语难学，首先就是语法难学。且不说语法术语含义艰深，就说那些例词例句读来也佶屈聱牙，那些语法内容，如语态和时态，语序和语气，还有句子结构和短语搭配，常让初学者头痛。然而，牛伢忍住头痛，潜心地啃着一本本汉语语法，用汉英句子结构比较的方法，迂回地学习英语语法。慢慢地，他的心里开窍了。
As is known to all.grammar is the most difficult to understand,not to mention the example sentences.Taking voice,tense,mood,order of sentences and collection of phrases,for example,we can see that grammar is really a hard nut to crack.Bravering the difficulty,Niuya still took the trouble to delve into books of Chinese grammar.He studied English grammar in a roundabout way in the light of the comparion between Chinese and English.As time went on,English grammar began to dawn on him.
其实，比学语法还要难学的是学口语。没有说英语的环境，没有训练口语的老师，学生口难开，开口就错。且不说句子的语调抑扬顿挫，让人难以琢磨，就说那些单词的发音，也让人张口结舌，还有那些习惯表达，让人百思不解，觉得很麻烦。然而，牛伢不厌其烦。没有人教发音，他就根据书上的发音要领，对着镜子看口型，一个一个音素地读，一个一个音节地练。没有人练口语，有时他对着墙壁练，把墙壁当听众，自问自答。
However,compared with grammar,spoken English is more difficult to learn.If not rigidly trained by teachers in the atmosphere favourable to English speaking ,beginners are subject to clamming or stammering out some random words when having a chat. The pronunciation of words usually makes beginners agape and tongue_tied,not to mention the sophisticated intonation,in addition to the troublesome idioms ,but Niuya didn’t mind taking the trouble to learn it.Though not taught the ways to pronounce,he began to delve into the books for the essentials of pronunciation,carefully study the degree of his own lip_rounding and practise pronouncing phonemes and syllables one by one.Though not teamed up to speak English,he often spoke to the wall by himself for practice instead.
记单词也不轻松，且不说每一个词的读音折腾人，就说要记下那么多的字母，英语学者的脑袋也不堪重负，还有难记的词义，易忘的词性，都让人伤脑筋，然后，牛伢根据单词音形义的内在联系，死记加巧记。有时，单词写在纸片上，写在手心里，写在随处看得见的物体上。慢慢地，筑起他的英语大厦的一砖一瓦，多了起了起来。
In addition to the difficulty in learning spoken English ,memorizing new words is also a hard nut to crack,because the beginner is really overburdened to memorize so many characters in his mind,not to mention the difficult pronunciation of each word,besides,the meanings and the forms of the words also call for your pains. Nevertheless,Niuya,tried to fill in his head with as many new words as he could.For the convenience of memorizing words,he wrote them on the pieces of paper,on his palms and on every object visible to him.Gradually,he laid a more and more solid foundation for his good English.
在不到一个学期的时间里，他已坠入了英语的爱河，欲罢不能了。在闲暇的课余时间里，他背下了几百个经典口语例句，阅读了几十份《北京英语周报》，写下了几十篇英语文章。对英语写作爱恋，让他时时心动，跃跃欲试。一种挡不住的诱惑，让他欣然命笔，用英语给社会主义兄弟国阿尔巴尼亚驻北京的大使馆写了一封长达五页的信，讴歌两国人民的伟大友谊。信去信又回，牛伢喜出望外。他在逆境中学习英语，立足学习本质，心系世界革命，得到使馆人员的赞赏。大使馆的回信，像一块石头，投进了蜚英山下的那个美丽校园里平静的水池，激起了层层浪花，还有串串碧水涟漪。牛伢的同学，还有同学的同学，把他的名字，还有他的故事传开了。牛伢因此闻名校内，也渐渐蜚声校外。牛伢的刻苦，牛伢的专心，牛伢的执著，终于让他得到英语的青睐。
Shortly after the beginning of the first term,he was affectionately inimmersed in the atmosphere of learning English,unable to stop.In his spare time, he memorized hundreds of typical spoken English example sentences,read dozens of copies of Peking Review and wrote scores of English dialogues.Out of his love of writing,he often itched in his mind to haves a try to write something.Strongly tempted by writing ,he once wrote a letter of English to Albania Embassy to Peking,in ode to the great friendship between the two peoples.Niuya was overjoyed with the reply.He based himself upon the study of English ,regardless of the adversity,for the world revolution in his mind and his spirit was praised by the embassy personnel.The reply ,just like a stone thrown into the pool ,stirring ripples and spindrifts in the water,caused a great sensation in the school.The story soon got round among the students in and outside the school.Therefore,Niuya became famous far and near and he finally paid off because of his concentration and perseverence in learning English.
牛伢两年的寒窗，潜心的钻研，艰苦的思索，反复的操练，不懈的追求，其实，无非是期盼窗外的景色，那就是考英语特长上大学，走上英语的熠熠生辉的阳光大道。牛伢学习累了的时候，也倚着斑驳褪色的窗栏，望着山峦起伏的地方，遐想将来考英语特长，辉映出上大学的美好前程的那片灿烂的天空。他觉得苦苦的学习，一定会有甜甜的回报。
The past two years saw the fact that Niuya was perseverent in cudgeling his brains for ways of learning English,digging into the essentials of English grammar and practising the skills of speaking English ,with a view to going to university by way of English speciality examination and forging ahead on the sunlit way of learning English .To relieve himself from the fatigue in his study,he occasionally leaned against the old and mottled window frames of his classroom,stretching his eyes far over the montains rising and falling in the distance and picturing to himself the brilliant future when he would study in the beautiful campus of a university.He finaly realized that his effort will unquestionably pay off.
绵绵的时光又如绵绵的资水，川流不息。两年高中学习的时间，在不经意间过去了。可是时过境迁，牛伢毕业时，考英语特长的政策已被取消，高考的机会不再有，乡里兴起了贫下中农推荐上大学。其实，就是大队少数几个当权的“贫管委”，根据人际关系，推出一个上大学的人选。他们不搞考试，不看成绩，不问学问，乔太守乱点鸳鸯谱。可是有根叔家没有靠山，没有关系，牛伢永远不能成为被推人选，所以他只得在大学的门外徘徊，越来越远离上大学的梦想。他考英语特长的希望，仿佛就是有根婶洗衣盆里的肥皂泡，时间一久了，也就慢慢消失了。
Contiuous time passed like the continuous water slowly flowing in the Zijiang River. Niuya’s two years of study in his senior middle school had passed in a flash.However,everything changed when he left school.The former High Entrance Examination enrollment system and especially the one preferential for the students good at English was abolished because of the sequela of the Great Cultural Revolution,with the policy as its replacement that students can only be admitted to university on recommendation of the poor and lower_middle peasants in the countryside.To people’s disappointment,the essentials of this policy was,as a matter of fact, the encouragement of a kind of unhealthy tendency “Entering by the back door”in errolling students to university.To be more exact,the minority of the the Poor and Lower_middle Peasants Committee in the production brigade randomly chose the candidate just by favouritism,not by the candidates’ examination result s nor by their moral character.Not favoured by the Committee,Niuya had no access to university.So,he was disillusioned,now the reality being diverse far from his dream of going to university .All the hopes previously budded in his heart finally came in bubles just like the foams slowly disappearing in his mother’s washing basin.
希望是渺茫的，但渺茫的希望却还是希望。它像不灭的火种，在牛伢的脑海闪闪烁烁。过去的梦想，虽如过眼云烟，过去学英语的美好时光，虽渐渐远去，但远去不了的，却还是他对英语的强烈爱好。老师过去点点滴滴的教诲，仍然浸润着心灵，挥之不去，但他还是找不到出路。生活的艰辛，命运的多舛，岁月的蹉跎，使他迷茫，痛苦，彷徨。然而，他还是在迷茫中希望，在痛苦中挣扎，在彷徨中探索。憧憬希望，苦苦挣扎，努力探索，牛伢开始了居无定所，食无定食，到处漂泊，寻师访友的流浪生活。唉，当他的希望再次落空时，当他的挣扎无济于事时，当他的探索还是陷入迷茫时，他想到了一条不归路，一条到永远没有人烟的陌生世界去的路。当牛伢站在十字路口，那位与他朝夕相处的英语美人，袅袅而来，伸出手来把他拉回，然而，那只娇嫩的红酥手，把牛伢从死神的手里拉回来.
Though his hope was slim, he was still clinging to it.Though the happy days for him to learn English went by as transiently as a fleeting cloud,his strong interest in English still linguered in his mind.His teacher’s words still weighed with him.Nevertheless,the hardships of his life,the setbacks of his fortune and the waste of his time ,altogether, made him feel perplexed,agonizing and hesitating,but he still hoped in his perplexity,still struggled in his agony and still probed in his hesitation.In order to seek his new hope,he began to lead a vagrant life.Whenever he faied in realizing his dream ,he was plunged into deep sorrow again and he thought out a way,a way to a strange world far away from the cruel reality!But,whenever he was at the end of his row,a beautiful,soft and red hand pulled him back.
